This volume presents revised versions of papers from the meeting. Participants were invited to attempt both a critical review of work to date and a consideration of avenues for future work and both of these objectives are reflected in this volume. For similar reasons, the papers which follow include both case studies of particular regions and contributions with a broader geographical focus. Several contributors emphasize the role of studies of the present and recent past as the basis for reconstruction and understanding of the more distant past. The papers are ordered along the continuum landscape-land use-settlement, although the breadth of many contributions ensures a degree of arbitrariness here. No determination or dominance is covertly implied by this ordering and the volume can be read with equal plausibility from front to back or from back to front.-
