Description: T he chapters in this volume evolved over several years beginning as papers presented at “Place/N o-Place: Spatial Aspects of Urban Asian Religiosity,” an international conference on religion in urban space in Asia organized with my colleagues Ann Grodzins Gold and Gareth Fisher in the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. The three of us had just returned from initial fi eldwork in India, China, and S ingapore respectively with a new awareness of the rapidly changing urban landscape in Asia with religiously inspired organizations fully a part of these processes. Fisher and I work in major global cities while Gold continues her work in “village India” but now in a larger town just beginning to urbanize. We all knew other scholars doing similar work and with the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a Central New York Humanities Corridor, connecting Cornell, Rochester, and Syracuse Universities, we were able to bring twelve senior scholars and four advanced PhD students to campus – some as far away as Hong Kong and Seoul and others at nearby universities
