Description: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global public health problem. About a quarter of the world’s population is infected with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis and thus at risk of developing TB disease. TB is among the top 10 causes of death globally. According to 2020 WHO Global TB Report, an estimated 10.0 million people fell ill with TB, 1.2 million TB deaths among HIV-negative people and an additional 208,000 deaths among PLHIV in 2019. Drug-resistant TB continues to be a global public health threat with 3.4% of new TB cases and 18% of previously treated cases having multidrug resistant TB or rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB). According to 2020 Global TB Report, Ethiopia is among the 30 High TB and TB/HIV burden countries, with annual estimated TB incidence of 140/100,000 populations and death rate of 19 per 100,000 populations. Among the notified TB cases 1.1% of new TB cases and 7.5% among previously treated TB cases were also estimated to have MDR-TB in 2019. According to the Global TB Report 2017, 10.6 million people are estimated to have fallen ill with TB in 2016 while an estimated 1.3 million people died of TB. In addition, an estimated 4.1% of these new TB cases and 19% of the previously treated cases are believed to harbour Drug resistant-TB with an estimated 240 000 deaths annually due to Drug resistant-TB.
