Description:	The Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Dam, constructed over the Volta River between 1961 and 1965 and commissioned in 1966, is not visible from much of the Lower Volta and the Volta Lake settlements. However, few in these places are unaware of its long shadow. The profoundly negative impacts of the Akosombo and also the Kpong Dam on lives and livelihoods are visible all around the Lower Volta—in the polluted state of the Volta River, in the high poverty levels and the ongoing struggle to make a living, in the migration patterns and household demographics and in the bilharzia infections. It can also be inferred from the experiences of those who settled around the Lake—in the near absence of health, education and communication facilities, in the poor state of housing and living conditions and in the terrible living conditions of hordes of child fishermen
