Description: | Light can be used as an information carrier and transmitted in fibre optic cables or in on-chip optical interconnects. Photonic circuit elements are large but they operate at frequencies close to 1 terahertz, several orders of magnitude higher than typical switching speeds in microchip transistors. As current state-of-the-art nano-electronic devices operate at length scales that are much smaller than the wavelength of visible or infrared light, the diffraction limit makes it very difficult to combine the ultra-fast properties of photonic elements with nano-scale electronics. |
