Description: | Ylide chemistry has quite a long history. However, despite their age, ylides have never gone out of fashion. Historically, first studies on ylidic compounds were already reported at the end of the nineteenth century by Michaelis as well as Staudinger, who reported the first isolation and reactions toward C=X bonds The full potential of this reaction, however, was only recognized years later by Wittig in the 1950s. His well-known olefination reaction coined “ylide chemistry” for many years and – without doubt – ranks among the most outstanding achievements in synthetic chemistry of the twentieth century, rightly recognized by the Nobel Prize in 1979. |
