Title: Overcoming Religious Illiteracy
Authors: L. Moore, Diane
Keywords: Religion in Secondary Education
Issue Date: 2007
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan
Description: This book is written for the vast majority of well-intentioned and thoughtful educators, parents, and citizens who are frustrated with the current state of public discourse about issues of such significant importance. Though not everyone will agree with the priorities and positions xiv Preface 9781403963499ts01.qxd 18-9-07 09:06 PM Page xiv that I put forth here, it is my earnest hope that this book will serve as a method for a more respectful and transparent public conversation whereby foundational assumptions are exposed and positions are promoted in a spirit of dialogue rather than antagonism. The only people benefiting from these culture wars are those who are intentionally exploiting our vulnerability toward zealous and sometimes even nefarious ends. The most profound victims are our children who are learning that false representation of the facts, demonization of the “other,” and simplistic (often self-righteous) absolutism are acceptable terms of public discourse about matters of tremendous importance and complexity. We owe them and ourselves more than that, and I have every confidence that we can do better. My hope is that this book will be received as a small contribution toward that goal, and it is therefore dedicated to educators who inspire us to realize our highest aspirations and to my daughter Lily and her generation who are ready for the challenge.
