A book of this kind draws heavily on other historians’ work. My preparation for writing it has consisted largely of reading their books, along with works of theology, religious sociology, and religious journalism. I have supplemented this reading with an oral history project, asking a wide variety of people to talk about their religious lives as children. For the most recent years, about which there is little historical literature so far, I have relied heavily on journalists’ accounts.-
