Authors: TOMAS FREJKA JEAN-PAUL SARDON
Keywords: Childbearing Trends
Issue Date: 2005
Publisher: Springer
Description: This research project was initiated in 1999. During that year Gérard Calot and Tomas Frejka exchanged many electronic messages and subsequently had the opportunity to discuss the plans for the project in detail at the European Population Conference in The Hague in September. The first paper “The cohort fertility story: industrialized countries in the second half of the 20th and in the early 21st century” was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America in Los Angeles in March 2000. When an abbreviated version of that paper was being prepared for submission to the Population and Development Review, in June 2000 our dear colleague Gérard was diagnosed with cancer. Despite his illness, he continued to collaborate in the designing and writing of a number of subsequent papers and of this book. Altogether eleven papers or presentations at conferences emanated from the project.1 In one way or another they are all utilized in this book. Jean-Paul Sardon, based on his experience with analyzing cohort fertility (Sardon 1990), was collaborating in the project from the beginning, and got increasingly involved during Gérard’s illness. Up until his demise on 15 March 2001, Gérard was involved in preparing data, solving methodological issues, writing and reviewing manuscripts. It is the honor of the surviving collaborators to dedicate this book to Gérard’s memory.
