Description: | There is no question that contemporaneous demographic developments, notably ageing and international migration, exert a decisive influence on the level and growth of welfare in all countries, regions and cities. These two mega-trends, the structural rise of the share of elderly people and the rapid increase in cross-border (temporary or permanent) movements of people, have led to intensified interest—from both the scholarly community and policymaking bodies—in the system-wide implications of these two mega-trends for our societies. The rise of the ‘silver generation’ has far-reaching labour market participation effects and induces an intensive discussion on compensating mechanisms such as migration. In recent years, we have witnessed unprecedented spatial-demographic dynamics in many parts of the world as a result of political tensions, war conditions, income and employment disparities, ageing societies or fortune-seeking behaviour. The resulting migration flows—in the form of job migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, illegal migrants, or temporary migrants—have had far-reaching consequences for labour markets and regional welfare conditions in the receiving countries. The phenomenon of the ‘homo mobilis’ has at times also prompted public and political resistance against open orders and has played a critical role in the outcomes of recent democratic choice situations (such as the presidential elections in the USA or the Brexit referendum in the UK). The Regional Science Academy (TRSA)—a recently established scholarly institution in the field of the spatial sciences with the aim to act as a catalyst for innovative thinking in regional science and related disciplines—has made an ambitious attempt to address these issues by organizing a so-called Advanced Brainstorm Carrefour (ABC) in May 2016 at the Tinbergen Institute in Amsterdam. Several well-known scholars expressed their views on the issues concerned at this scientific gathering. These presentations and discussions formed the source of inspiration for the present volume on Modelling Aging and Migration Effects on Spatial Labor Markets, supplemented with editorial contributions by other scholars. The additional wish to thank the Tinbergen Institute for providing hospitality for this meeting, the Institut fuer Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung (IAB—Institute for Employment Research) in Nurnberg for its support for this meeting and the secretaries Elfie Bonke and Jenny Wiersema for their unrivalled help in organizing this unforgettable scientific venue. |
