| dc.description | This book has come about as the result of two diVerent things. One is an accident of birth and upbringing, the fact that I was brought up bilingual in English and Danish. This placed the Scandinavian archaeological literature within my reach, including the early publications of the Three Age System, and I started reading these simply for fun. As a student in Cambridge in the 1970s I had attended lectures by that great raconteur of archaeological history, Glyn Daniel, and subsequently explored his writings and those of others on the early history of archaeology. Comparing these with what I was encountering as I read the original material, I came to realize that the history of archaeology presented in English language textbooks is at the very least incomplete; often downright wrong. Quite a lot of work has been done over the years by Scandinavians interested in the history of their archaeology, and this has provided considerable insights to those who can read Danish or Swedish. Not much of this has been published in English, however, and a great deal remains to be done in general. The Scandinavian chapters of this book are therefore an attempt to redress the balance, and present a more comprehensive picture of the crucial period in Scandinavian archaeology | - |
