The first edition of this book was written entirely in the late 1980s. It has been revised twice (in 1999 and 2003) to take account of the major developments which have taken place since then, notably the impact of the end of the Cold War, the two Gulf Wars and the ups and downs of the Israeli–Palestinian peace process, as well as the intensification of the moves towards greater economic, and in a few cases, greater political, liberalization. Inevitably this has been something of a chastening experience for the author, particularly when faced with the fallout from the two unexpected events which took place just after the second edition was published in 2000: the outbreak of the second Palestinian Intifada and then the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001en_US
