The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population’s Panel on Historical Demography applies a historical perspective, such as the application of methods that allow analysis of the role of space and time in population, to promote work of contemporary relevance. New approaches to space and time in demographic analysis are now contributing in important ways to understanding how populations change. The application of these methods to historical populations helps evaluate theory and establish means for understanding demographic transformations in the contemporary world. The Panel organizes workshops that draw together scientists at the forefront of these issues to compare and discuss important new work. Navigating Time and Space in Population Studies is intended to extend the discussions held at a Workshop on Space and Time cosponsored by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, to a broader community of demographers, geographers and historians. The contributions in this volume bring together the work of researchers from many disciplines to concentrate on the factors that accelerate and retard the spatial diffusion processes that are the theoretical norm in much demographic analysis. They show that the factors at work are complex and that the methods that are useful for understanding change across space and through time are rich and varied. Our hope is that these chapters will spur additional research that will further improve our understanding of these very important questions.-
