This book provides a structure and framework for analysing sus- tainable development and the role of materials in it. Chapter 1 sets the scene. Chapters 2 to 6 describe the method, first in a sim- ple, broad way, then with added details and aids. The method is illustrated in a set of six case studies, introduced in Chapter 7 and presented in Chapters 8 to 13. Chapter 14 takes a broader view leading up to the idea of a circular materials economy. Chapter 15 describes a database that is designed to support the analysis of sustainable developments, and illustrates its content and use. Chapter 16 is aimed at instructors. It summarizes our experience in using the approach developed in the book and suggests the way the approach can be used for project or activity-based teaching. The book ends with an Appendix that compiles useful numbers.en_US
