Description: This book is based is largely on the results from a project called CORTEX (IST-1999-10236) which was funded under the European Commission’s Fifth Framework Programme under the Future Emerging Technologies proactive initiative Nanotechnology Informatio n Devices and ran from January 2000 to June 2003. Titled ‘Design and Construction of Elements of a Hybrid Molecular/Electronic Retina-Cortex Structure’, the project examined how to construct a three-dimensional system for computer vision. Instead of concentrating on any particular device technology, however, the project was primarily focussed on how to connect activ e device layers together in order to build a three-dimensionalsystem. Becau se the system was aimed at the nanoscale, we concentrated on techniques which were scalable, some of which utilized molecular self-assembly. But we also n eeded a practical experimental system to test these technologies so we also included work to fabricate test substrates which included through-chip vias. Consid ering the multi-disciplinary nature of the project, the end result was remark ably successful in that a three-chip stack was demonstrated using more than one molecular interconnection technology.
