Description:	The relationship of the university and the city has become an increasingly popular topic in recent years. The growth of the knowledge economy and the renewed importance of urban areas in the global economy have prompted expansion of urban universities, increased their visibility locally and nationally, and brought attention to their physical development. Over the past seven years we have been exploring the contributions of the university to the development of the city and, conversely, what the university gains from its developmental and broader institutional relationships with the city in which it is located. We have focused on land development as a critical nexus in which the promises as well as the conflicts of the relationships between universities and their neighborhoods and cities are played out.
