This book is intended to be practical in nature. During the past 15 years I have found questionnaire theory to be very helpful in my own research. I designed my first questionnaire in the mid-1980s for my PhD work and because my specialization area - the study of L2 motivation - is very closely linked to the use of questionnaires, I have since then taken part as a principal researcher, participant, or supervisor in numerous studies surveying over 10, 000 learners. The idea to share my experience in the use of questionnaires with a broader audience occurred to me last year when I was working on the research section of a book on motivation (Dornyei, 2001), and thanks to the encouragement I have received from Susan Gass right from the beginning, the initial idea has eventually lead to this book.en_US
