The book is organized into four major parts: (1) the profession, (2) social work practice, (3) social welfare policy, and (4) client populations and contexts. A fifth section, the epilogue, focuses on personal values and consideration of a social work career. The intent is to give students a broad look at what social work is all about. Social welfare policy is stressed as the foundation of social welfare programs and social work practice. New accreditation standards require that students demonstrate competency in “policy practice,” including being able to “analyze, formulate, and advocate for policies that advance social well-being” (CSWE, 2008b, p. 6). Students are encouraged to explore issues based on theoretical orientations to social welfare policy development and the resulting program implementation.-
