In brief, this book discusses a social phenomenon, namely, ritual practice, performed within the densely commercialized context of urban Japan. By investigating the case of Japan, I wish to contribute to the general understanding of ritual practice in urban modern societies, as this is a still relatively underexplored fi eld. Also, concerning the case of shichigosan, which is a very popular observance in present-day Japan, this has received almost no signifi cant scholarly attention in English, and even in Japanese, there exist only few specialized studies on this ritual.en_US
