The concept for the book developed slowly, probably over a period of 12 months. It started with a feeling that many design engineers were so immersed in their work that they could not see the design process. This lead to concern that the requirements for the different design stages where frequently misunderstood and developed into 'how can the design process be improved?'. Finally the need to ®nd a dissertation subject that satis®ed the requirements of Warwick University's engineering business management course crystallised the thoughts into actions. The dissertation took 18 months to complete and a further 2 years to convert into a book.en_US
