This is the first study to analyze in detail the ways patients claim power through talk; previous studies have focused on doctors' claims to power. No other study has given an overview of the many ways power is claimed in medical talk. This is the first study with equal numbers of female and male physicians in the data; female physicians were very much in the minority in other studies. No other book on medical discourse has included substantial numbers of cancer patients and oncologists or considered the impact of a cancer diagnosis. |
