Description: | In developed countries, human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the major infectious cause of congenital birth defects including microcephaly, mental retardation, sensorineural hearing loss, and intrauterine growth restriction. Nonetheless, because of the potential for teratogenicity and toxic effects, no prenatal therapeutic treatment is currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for congenital CMV infection. Therefore there is great interest in understanding CMV growth and blocking or altogether preventing CMV infection |
