dc.description | This book is intended to give an accessible introduction to the contours of the contemporary study of religion. It was written out of a sense that there have been many recent and exciting developments in the field that are not yet reflected in a beginner’s guide – such as this book. What this book aims to show is that the study of religion is a dynamic field relevant not only to the past, but also to the contemporary world. Religion is everywhere in today’s world, often in quite unexpected places, and we need a sophisticated approach to understanding how religion works in such contexts. Hence in this book I have tried to avoid – as much as possible – the familiar term ‘religious studies’ and instead put forward a more nuanced alternative: the study of religion and culture. | - |
