Description: | In 2006/07, the fi rst social work graduates began to emerge from new qualifying degree programmes, and the care councils in the four UK countries set about implementing new post-qualifying (PQ ) frameworks for education and training. Against this background, the authors became interested in identifying the factors involved in social workers making the transition from qualifi cation, through induction and consolidation, to established professionals. Our ideas prompted us to undertake a small-scale research study involving a total of 41 social workers, line managers and staff development offi cers from three statutory child care agencies in the south-west of England. The aim of the study was to investigate what newly qualifi ed social workers know and do on entering fi rst employment, and what links are made to ongoing professional development using the consolidation stage of the PQ framework in England. The fi ndings from the study have informed much of our thinking in writing this book, and extracts from the questionnaires and interviews with those who took part appear regularly throughout the text, highlighting many of the key themes which emerged. |
