This research project is about the past as well as the future in organizations in general and about an organization’s temporal contextualization in particular. How organizations are able to construct a present with respect to their past and future is still a key question in organization science. The research project is based on an empirical case study, in which an R&D department has been followed for a six month-period in order to analyse how an organization orients itself with respect to its past, present and future from the perspective of communication-centred social systems theory. This introductory chapter aims to position the research project in relation to the contemporary debate on this topic and specifies the aim as well as the central question of this research on the basis of an empirical example. Furthermore the structure of this work is introduced.-
