Description:	Following a brief presentation of the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) outcome and reactions to it, the chapter introduces some of the core theoretical debates associated with the study of philanthropic foundations’ involvement in the international climate debate. It looks at how the existence of underlying agendas in foundations raises important legitimacy and accountability concerns. The chapter also analyses philanthropic foundations’ broader societal functions—and in particular their role as fi eld-builders.
