Description:	Finally, we should emphasise that the aim of this volume is not to establish ‘‘material’’ or ‘‘nonhuman’’ agency as some kind of sustainable alternative to the idea of human agency. Rather, our primary intention is to provoke debate, with the term ‘‘material agency’’ intended as a challenge to the anthropocentrism inherent in existing approaches to agency. Some of the contributions to this volume argue that it is correct to centre our understanding of agency on the human; we are not averse to this when it is clearly and explicitly argued, as it is here, rather than implicitly assumed. We have not been looking for a consensus, but have actively sought divergent views
