This book aims to contribute to bridging the gap between contiguous strands of literature by providing an articulate refl ection on the productive relationships underpinning the creation and circulation of the lesbian , gay , bisexual , transgender , queerand intersex(LGBTQI) citizen and rights-holder in the European continent, defi ned not by the narrow borders of the European Union, but as an aspirational entity and symbolic space of belonging. By combining a Foucauldian perspective on the productive operation of human rights law on LGBTQI persons with a critical deconstruction of some strands of case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on sexual orientation and gender identity, this books seeks to explore the ways in which LGBTQI persons, and the recognition of their rights claims, are at the core of the process by which a “European identity” and a “European Citizenship” is relentlessly sought and defi ned.-
